Prince Albert II of Monaco, also a five-time Olympian in bobsleigh, said the venue for the Beijing 2022 bobsleigh event is unbelievable with one of the best facilities in the world.
Prince Albert II came to Beijing to attend last Friday’s opening ceremony, which marked his 11th visit to China.
The visiting prince also made his way to the National Sliding Center, also called “Snow Dragon,” in Yanqing District of Beijing on Thursday, which will host the bobsleigh, skeleton, and luge competitions during the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games.
In an exclusive interview with the China Global Television Network (CGTN) the same day, the prince hailed the facilities and services of the Snow Dragon, hoping it will become a great hub for the development of sliding sports in Asia.
“This is an unbelievable venue and to listen to all the commentaries of old friends and other athletes and officials. This is really one of the best facilities in the world, both in terms of the track is interesting. It’s not dangerous, it’s fast. Also, all the services around the track and all the way it’s set up. I think this is a lasting legacy for sliding sports in China, but also I think it could be a great hub for the development of sliding sports, also in Asia,” said the prince.
The Winter Olympics is being held at a time when the world is grappling with the lingering COVID-19 pandemic. The prince believes it’s the concerted efforts of everyone that has made the Games happen.
“Now with COVID, that has also changed. And the fact that these games can still take place, I think is a great tribute to not only Beijing, China, the authorities, the organizing committee and the International Olympic Committee, but I think everybody worked together to make these games happen,” he said.
Not just the regent of the principality, Albert II is also a seasoned athlete who has competed in bobsleighing five times between 1988 and 2002.
He said sport is an important and instructive part of his life, and in terms of bobsleighing, it’s good to share with others the same kind of feelings and be confronted with the same challenges.
“Sport has been a very important part of my life, and it has taught me so much about myself, about other people, about how to interact with other people, but also how to understand other people, and when you are confronted with the difficulties of a sport, any sport, but in this case, bobsleighing, when you’re confronted with the same dangers and the same difficulties and the same hardships, and everybody has the same kind of experiences, and so it’s really incredible to be able to share that with people who understand that,” he said.
Thinking highly of the significance of sport in everyday life, he said it can send great messages of solidarity, determination, goodwill and strength.
“The values of sport help you in everyday life. You have to overcome certain difficulties, but you have to take it on yourself, and to know your limits, but also understand the importance of teamwork and of going beyond what you think you’re capable of doing, and so that these are the great messages of solidarity, but also determination and goodwill and strength,” said the prince.
The Beijing 2022 bobsleigh competitions will be held from February 13 to February 20 in the National Sliding Center.
